This soft bread is really easy to make. It can be eaten for breakfast. In France, it is usually used for making sandwich for children because that is softer than a baguette.

I always make my bread with a bread maker (this recipe has been tested with a bread maker)

PREPARATION: 10 minutes + 15 in the bread maker + 40 minutes for the growing of the dough
COOK: 20 minutes at 200°C

What do you need ?

  • 1 egg
  • 50g butter or light butter
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 230 g milk
  • 4 tablespoon sugar
  • 500 g flour
  • 3 or 4 g dried yeast (1/2 sachet)

How to make Pain au lit?

  • In a bread maker, put these ingredients in this order:
  1. Egg
  2. Luckwarm milk
  3. Melted butter
  4. Salt
  5. Sugar
  6. Flour
  7. Dried yeast
  • Use the dough program of your bread maker

! Tip: check during the process that a nice dough is in progress, it can be necessary to add some milk if the dough is too dried or some flour if the dough is too liquid. It would advise to wait until the end of the program before adding ingredients.

  • Remove the dough from the bread maker
  • Redo a nice ball of dough
  • Split the dough in around 20 small ball
  • Put the small balls in a baking tray
  • Spread yolk egg on top of each ball (that will help to have a shiny appearance)
  • Let them rise in a warm environment for 40/60 minutes

! Tip:  the dough needs to have grown double

  • Put them in a preheated oven at 200°C for 20 minutes
  • Then put the hot Pain au lait on a shelf to let it cool down
