So, I was walking down the bustling corridors of Westminster today, you know, just another day in the life of a parliamentary groupie. I swear, sometimes it feels like I'm in a real-life game of Guess Who, trying to spot who's who among the MPs. But today, something caught my eye - or rather, a whole bunch of somethings. I'm talking about the lapel badges, of course!
Lapel Badges: The New Power Accessory?
Now, I've always been a bit fascinated by these little bling-bobs. They're like the MPs' version of a secret handshake, a way of showing off their allegiances, their causes, their... well, their stuff. And today, they were out in full force. It was like a badge-off, a badge-athon, a badge-tastrophe!
I mean, don't get me wrong, I love a good lapel badge. I've got a collection at home - well, it's more of a shoebox full, but still. But today, it was like the MPs had raided my shoebox and decided to have a lapel badge party. And I was not invited.
Badges of Honour
So, what were they wearing? Well, let's start with the big guns. The Brexit badges were out in full force - 'Take Back Control', 'No Deal is Better Than a Bad Deal', that sort of thing. I half expected to see a 'Make Westminster Great Again' badge, but maybe that's just my American TV influence showing.
Then there were the climate change badges - 'Climate Emergency', 'Save the Planet', 'Make Our Planet Great Again' (yes, I know, I couldn't resist). I saw one MP with a badge that said 'I Heart Trees'. I wanted to ask if they'd considered a career in greeting cards, but I figured that might be a bit too informal, even for me.
And the NHS badges. Oh, the NHS badges. 'Save Our NHS', 'Love Our NHS', 'NHS Heroes'. I saw one MP with a badge that said 'NHS: The Best Thing About the UK'. I wanted to ask if they'd considered a career in tourism, but again, I figured that might be a bit too... well, you know.
Badges of Dishonour?
Now, I'm all for MPs showing their support for causes they believe in. It's part of what makes our democracy great. But I did see a few badges that made me raise an eyebrow. One MP had a badge that said 'I Heart Pugs'. I mean, don't get me wrong, pugs are great. But is that really what we want our MPs to be focusing on?

And then there was the MP who had a badge that said 'I Heart Coffee'. I mean, come on. We all know that's just a ploy to get more free coffee in the House of Commons. I'm onto you, MP. I see you.
Badges of Confusion
But my favourite - and I use that term loosely - was the MP who had a badge that said 'Ask Me About My Other Badges'. I mean, what? Is that like a parliamentary version of a chain letter? Do I have to ask? Because I'm not sure I can handle any more badges. I'm already feeling like a badge-geek overload.
But seriously, folks, it was fascinating to see the badges on display today. It's like a little glimpse into the minds of our MPs. It's like they're saying, 'This is who I am. This is what I stand for. And if you don't like it, you can... well, you can't really do anything about it, because I'm an MP and you're not.'
So, next time you're in Westminster - or even if you're just walking down the street and you see an MP - take a look at their lapel. You might just learn something. Or you might just see a badge that says 'I Heart Pugs'. And that, my friends, is a whole other story.
