Do Schools Close On Columbus Day

Columbus Day: A Holiday as Elusive as Bigfoot

You know how sometimes you hear about a holiday, but you're not entirely sure if it's real or just a myth? Like, you've heard whispers of a day called "National Pancake Day," but you've never actually seen it on your calendar. Well, that's kind of how I feel about Columbus Day.

So, Do Schools Close on Columbus Day?

Alright, let's dive into the mystery. Columbus Day, or as some places call it, Indigenous Peoples' Day, falls on the second Monday of October. It's supposed to commemorate Christopher Columbus's arrival in the Americas. But does that mean schools take a day off? Let's break it down.

In some places, like many states in the U.S., schools do close. They might use it as a day to educate students about Native American culture and history. But in other places, schools stay open. It's like trying to catch a Pokémon - you never know if you're going to get lucky.

It's a bit like trying to catch a Pokémon - you never know if you're going to get lucky. One day, you're celebrating with a day off, and the next, you're sitting in math class, wondering why everyone else is posting pictures of parades on social media.

Why the Confusion?

You might be wondering why there's so much confusion around this holiday. Well, it's kind of like trying to explain the plot of "Inception" to someone who's never seen it. It's complicated.

First off, not everyone agrees that Columbus should be celebrated. Some people think he's more responsible for the colonization and mistreatment of indigenous peoples than for "discovering" America. Because, you know, people were already living here.

Second, some places have replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples' Day to honor the original inhabitants of the land. It's like when you finally realize that the sidekick was the real hero all along, and you decide to make a movie about them instead.

Making the Most of It

Whether you get a day off or not, there are plenty of ways to make the most of Columbus Day. You could learn about Native American culture, explore your local history, or even start a petition to change the name of your school's sports team (just kidding... or am I?).
