Where Is Pesto In The Grocery Store

So, there I was, standing in the middle of the grocery store aisle, staring at a wall of pasta sauces like it was the Mona Lisa. I'd been on a pesto kick lately - you know, the stuff that makes your pasta taste like a little piece of Italy? But for the life of me, I couldn't find it. I mean, it's not like I was looking for truffles or something. This was basic stuff!

Anyway, I figured I wasn't the only one having this issue, so I thought I'd share my little adventure in finding pesto. Grab a cart, folks, we're going on a grocery store safari!

First things first: The pasta aisle

You'd think pesto would be right here, next to the marinara and the Alfredo. I mean, they're all pasta sauces, right? But no, that would make too much sense. I spent a good five minutes scanning the shelves, my eyes crossing from all the red labels. But no green pesto jar in sight. I was starting to feel like I was in some kind of pasta sauce twilight zone.

So, I did what any sensible person would do. I asked the nice lady stocking the shelves. She looked at me like I was crazy (I might have been a little flustered at this point) and said, "Oh honey, pesto's not with the pasta. It's with the real Italian stuff." I was confused, but I was determined, so I thanked her and moved on.

Off to the 'real' Italian stuff

Now, I'm not sure what the 'real' Italian stuff is, but it turns out it's not where I thought it would be. I ended up in this little section tucked away in the corner, between the international foods and the ethnic snacks. It was like a little grocery store within the grocery store. I felt like I'd discovered some secret pasta sauce society.

There, among the jars of olives and cans of artichoke hearts, I finally found my pesto. It was like finding a long-lost friend. I could almost hear the angels singing. I grabbed a jar (well, two, because who can have just one pesto sauce?) and felt like I'd just won some kind of grocery store game show.

But wait, there's more!

Now, I know what you're thinking. "But what if I don't want the jarred stuff? What if I want to make my own pesto?" Well, my friend, you're in luck. Because pesto is made from basil, garlic, pine nuts, and cheese (among other things), you can find all the ingredients you need in their respective sections.

Basil is usually in the produce section, near the lettuce and the tomatoes. Garlic, too, if it's in season. Pine nuts are in the baking aisle, with the other nuts and seeds. And cheese? Well, that's in the dairy section, of course. You could probably make a whole meal out of the ingredients you need for pesto. Just saying.

So, where's the best place to find pesto?

Well, that depends on what you're looking for. If you want the convenience of a jar, it's in the 'real' Italian stuff section. If you want to make your own, you'll have to do a little more hunting. But hey, at least you'll know where to find everything next time, right?

And who knows, maybe you'll discover some other 'real' Italian stuff while you're at it. Just don't ask me where the truffles are. I'm still looking.

Happy pesto hunting, folks!
