When Is Wicked Part 2 Coming Out

So, When's the Big 'Wicked' Sequel Hitting the Stage?

Alright, gather 'round, my fellow musical theatre enthusiasts, because we're about to dive into the great 'Wicked' sequel mystery. Now, I know what you're thinking, "But I thought 'Wicked' was already a sequel to 'The Wizard of Oz'?" Well, yes, but this time we're talking about a sequel to the musical itself. Buckle up, folks, it's gonna be a wild ride.

Let's Set the Stage

So, 'Wicked' premiered on Broadway in 2003, and it's been breaking records and stealing hearts ever since. It's like the musical equivalent of a blockbuster movie franchise, right? But unlike Hollywood, Broadway's been a bit quieter on the sequel front. Until now, that is.

In 2019, composer Stephen Schwartz and book writer Winnie Holzman dropped a bombshell. They announced that they were working on a sequel to 'Wicked'. Cue the applause, the cheers, and the inevitable 'Wicked' puns (yes, I went there).

But When, You Ask?

Well, that's the million-dollar question, isn't it? The duo has been pretty tight-lipped about the details, but here's what we do know:

1. It's not happening tomorrow: Schwartz has mentioned that they're taking their time to get it right. So, don't hold your breath for a 2022 premiere. Patience, my friends, is a virtue.

2. It's not a direct sequel: Unlike 'Wicked', which picks up where 'The Wizard of Oz' left off, this sequel will be more of a 'prequel-quel'. It'll explore the backstories of some of our favorite characters, like Elphaba and Glinda, before the events of 'The Wizard of Oz'. Think of it as a 'Wicked' origin story.

3. It's not just for Broadway: Schwartz has hinted that the sequel could potentially have a life beyond Broadway. Could we see a 'Wicked' sequel tour or even a movie adaptation? Only time will tell.

So, What's the Hold-Up?

Well, apart from the fact that they're trying to create another musical masterpiece, there's been a bit of a pandemic situation. You know, just a tiny global crisis that's put a bit of a hold on live theatre. But fear not, dear theatre-goers, Broadway is rising from the ashes, and with it, our hopes for a 'Wicked' sequel.

In the meantime, why not dust off your old 'Wicked' soundtrack and have a sing-along? After all, there's no time like the present to brush up on your 'Defying Gravity' skills. You never know when you might need to belt out a show-stopping number to save the day (or at least, impress your friends).

And Finally...

Remember, folks, Broadway has a way of making us wait. But when that curtain finally rises, and we're transported back to the magical land of Oz, it'll all be worth it. So, keep your eyes peeled, your ears to the ground, and your vocal cords warmed up. Because when 'Wicked Part 2' finally hits the stage, you're gonna want to be ready.

And hey, if all else fails, you can always just ask the Wizard. He's got all the answers, right? (Spoiler alert: He doesn't. But that's a story for another time.)
