What Year Did 4runner Get Apple Carplay

Hey there, tech enthusiast! You know how we all love our Toyota 4Runners, right? Well, let's talk about when our beloved SUVs got a taste of that sweet, sweet Apple magic - you know, CarPlay.

First things first, let's set the stage. We're talking about the good ol' 2014 model year here. That's right, folks! It was back in 2014 that Toyota decided to roll out the red carpet for Apple's CarPlay. But why then, you ask? Well, it's not like Toyota was sitting on their hands before that. They were busy making sure their systems were up to snuff to handle the Apple charm.

Now, let's rewind a bit. Before 2014, our 4Runners were cruising the streets with their trusty Entune Audio systems. Don't get me wrong, they were great - but they were, well, Toyota. You know what I mean? They were reliable, but they weren't exactly setting the tech world on fire.

Enter: CarPlay

So, 2014 rolls around, and suddenly, our 4Runners are getting a serious upgrade. Apple CarPlay starts showing up in the newer models, and it's like our SUVs got a whole new personality. Maps, music, messages - it was all right there at our fingertips. No more fumbling with cables or trying to remember if we'd synced our tunes last time.

But here's the thing, folks. Even though CarPlay was new to the 4Runner in 2014, it wasn't available in every model. It was more of a luxury feature, reserved for the higher trim levels. So, if you were rocking a base model back then, you might've had to wait a bit longer to get your hands on that sweet Apple goodness.

And What About Retrofitting?

Now, you might be wondering if you can add CarPlay to an older 4Runner. The short answer? It's not as simple as installing a new app. Toyota didn't make it easy for us retrofitting enthusiasts. They used a specific head unit that's not exactly user-friendly when it comes to swapping out. But hey, if you're determined, there are always ways - just be prepared for a bit of a challenge.
