Let's Talk Music Theory, Real Quick

Before we get to the key, let's brush up on our music theory basics. You know how some songs sound happy, while others might make you reach for the tissues? A lot of that comes down to the key they're in. It's like the emotional color of the song.

Keys are based on scales, which are like the building blocks of music. Each key has a certain number of sharps or flats in its scale. For example, C Major has no sharps or flats, while G Major has one sharp (F#).

Now, About That Key

So, what key is Shelter in? Drumroll, please... It's in the key of D Major! That's right, the same key as the happy birthday song. But don't let that fool you, Shelter is far from your average birthday tune.

D Major has two sharps in its scale (F# and C#), which gives it a bright, cheerful sound. It's no wonder Shelter feels so uplifting! The key also plays nicely with Porter's signature synths and melodies, creating that magical, dreamy atmosphere we all love.
