So, there I was, scrolling through Netflix, you know, just casually looking for something to watch. I'd already binged Stranger Things and Bridgerton, and I was feeling like I needed something... different. I stumbled upon this old movie, The Breakfast Club, and thought, "Why not? It's got a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, can't go wrong there."
Fast forward to the end of the movie, and I'm sitting there, thinking, "Huh, that was actually pretty good." But then, I remembered something. I remembered that Rotten Tomatoes, the place where I go to find out if a movie is any good or not, is... closing down. I mean, not the whole site, just the user reviews part. And suddenly, I felt like I'd just found out my favorite bookstore was closing. I mean, sure, I can still go to Amazon, but it's just not the same, right?
So, what's the deal with Rotten Tomatoes closing user reviews?
Alright, so let's rewind a bit. If you've been living under a rock (or just not paying attention), Rotten Tomatoes is announcing the end of user reviews. They're saying it's because of "toxic behavior" and "trolling." Now, I'm not saying I'm an angel when it comes to online behavior, but I do think it's a bit of a stretch to blame the entire user review system on a few bad apples.
Must Read
I mean, think about it. User reviews are what make Rotten Tomatoes, well, Rotten Tomatoes. It's where we go to find out what regular people think about a movie, not just some stuffy critic who's probably never seen a horror movie in their life. It's where we go to find out if a movie is actually worth our time and money.
But what about the trolls?
Okay, I get it. Trolls are a thing. They're annoying, they're rude, and they're everywhere. But is closing down the entire user review system the answer? I mean, can't we just... I don't know, moderate the comments or something? Isn't that what the internet is for?
And let's not forget about the good reviews. The ones that actually help us make a decision about whether or not to watch a movie. The ones that make us feel like we're part of a community. The ones that make us feel like we're not just throwing money into a black hole.

So, what now?
I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens. Maybe Rotten Tomatoes will find a way to make user reviews work again. Maybe they'll come up with a new system that's even better than before. Or maybe, just maybe, we'll all have to find a new place to go for our movie reviews.
But for now, I guess it's just you, me, and the critics. And let's be real, we all know that critics aren't always right. I mean, have you seen Cats?
Anyway, I guess this is just a reminder that things change. Sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. But no matter what happens, we'll always have the movies. And isn't that what really matters?
Until next time, folks. Keep watching.
