Setting the Stage

Parris is freaking out. He's worried about what the town will think, and he's got good reason. Salem's a hotbed of gossip, and if word gets out that his niece was dancing with the devil, well, that's not great for his reputation.

Betty Parris: The First Casualty

Back at the Parris house, we meet Betty Parris, the reverend's daughter. She's not doing so hot. She's been acting strange, and no one knows why. Abigail spills the beans: Betty was in the woods with them, and now she's paying the price for their little dance party.

Suddenly, the room's filled with doctors and townsfolk, all trying to figure out what's wrong with Betty. She's convulsing, she's screaming, she's definitely putting on a show. And that's when Abigail drops the W-word: witchcraft.

And So It Begins...

Abigail accuses Tituba, the Parris' slave, of witchcraft. Tituba confesses, and suddenly, the floodgates are open. The girls start naming names, and the town's in an uproar. Parents are freaking out, kids are loving the drama, and Salem's on its way to becoming the witch-hunting capital of the world.
