My Husband Has Dementia And I Can T Cope

So, My Hubby's Brain Went on Vacation. Here's How We're Coping.

Hey there, friend! Grab a cuppa, let's chat. You know how sometimes you misplace your keys, or forget where you left your phone? Well, my husband, Bob, he's sort of in that state of mind, but full-time. Yep, he's got dementia, and it's been quite the ride. But hey, we're making it work, one silly moment at a time.

First Things First: The Diagnosis

So, Bob and I were sitting in the doctor's office, and the doc says, "Bob's got dementia." I looked at Bob, he looked at me, and then we both burst out laughing. I mean, the doc was serious, but come on, "dementia"? That's like saying your car has "carness." It's just too big a word for such a tiny brain!

But jokes aside, it was a tough pill to swallow. I mean, Bob's always been the life of the party, the guy who could remember everyone's birthday, every anniversary. Now, he's lucky if he remembers what day of the week it is. But you know what? That's okay. We're figuring it out together.

Our New Normal: Routine is Our BFF

You know what they say, "Routine is the spice of life." Whoever "they" are, they're right. With Bob's dementia, routine has become our superpower. Every morning, it's the same old song and dance: breakfast at 8, meds at 9, walk the dog at 10. Bob might not remember what he had for breakfast, but he sure as heck knows it's time to walk the dog at 10!

And you know what? It's not so bad. We've turned our home into a little oasis of predictability. I've even started labeling everything - the fridge, the cupboards, even Bob's favorite chair. It's like living in a real-life game of "Where's Waldo," but with more laundry and less adventure.

Memory Lane: The Good, The Bad, and The Hilarious

Bob might not remember what he had for lunch, but boy, can he recall stories from our past. We'll be sitting there, and he'll suddenly start talking about this time we went camping, or that time he tried to cook dinner (don't ask). I'll be laughing, and he'll look at me, confused, and say, "Why are you crying?" Because, Bob, those are tears of laughter, you silly goose!

But it's not all sunshine and roses. Sometimes, Bob gets frustrated. He'll look at me, and I can see the fear in his eyes. He knows something's not right, but he can't put his finger on it. Those are the tough times. But even then, we find a way to laugh. I'll remind him that he's still the love of my life, even if he can't remember what we had for breakfast. And he'll laugh, and say, "Well, that's a relief!"

Support System: Friends, Family, and a Whole Lot of Love

You know who's been our rock through all this? Our friends and family. They've been there, every step of the way. They listen when I need to vent, they laugh with us when Bob tells the same story for the tenth time that day, and they bring over food. Lots and lots of food. Because, let's face it, who doesn't love a good casserole?

And the love? Oh, the love is still there. It's different now, sure. It's not the same as it was twenty years ago. But it's deeper. It's stronger. It's the kind of love that says, "I'm here for you, no matter what." And that, my friend, is something special.

Looking Ahead: One Day at a Time

So, what's next? Well, we're taking it one day at a time. We're laughing, we're loving, and we're living. We're making new memories, even if Bob won't remember them. And you know what? That's okay. Because I'll remember for the both of us.

And who knows? Maybe one day, Bob's brain will come back from vacation. But until then, we're making the most of our little adventure. Because life's too short to not find the joy, even in the tough times.

So, here's to Bob, and his wandering brain. Here's to us, and our new normal. And here's to you, for being a fantastic listener. Now, go grab a cuppa, and let's chat some more. After all, we're all in this crazy thing called life together.
