How Old Is Dorothy Gale In The Wizard Of Oz

Blowing Away the Dust: Dorothy's Age in Oz

So, you've been wondering about Dorothy Gale's age in The Wizard of Oz, huh? You're not alone, pal. It's like trying to figure out how old your grandma was when she first started baking those legendary apple pies. You know, the ones that made your taste buds dance the can-can.

Now, let's dive into this yellow brick road of curiosity. First off, the book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, was published in 1900. The author, L. Frank Baum, didn't specify Dorothy's age. It's like he was playing a game of coy, winking at us from behind his typewriter.

The movie, though, that's a different story. It came out in 1939, and by golly, they gave us a hint. Remember the Munchkins? Those little folks singing "Ding, dong! The witch is dead"? Well, they told us Dorothy was "over the hill" compared to them. Now, that's a laugh, isn't it? It's like saying your teenager is "over the hill" compared to their toddler sibling.

But hold onto your ruby slippers, folks. Here's where it gets interesting. In the movie, Dorothy is played by the lovely and talented Judy Garland. When the film was released, Judy was just 16 years old. Sixteen! That's like finding out your high school history teacher was only a year older than you when she started teaching.

So, why the age mystery? Well, Baum wanted Dorothy to be a relatable Everygirl. Not too old, not too young. Just right, like Goldilocks' porridge. And the movie? They wanted a young actress who could play a kid, but with the acting chops of an adult. Enter Judy Garland, the perfect blend of youth and wisdom.

Now, you might be thinking, "But what about the books that came after the first one? Did they give us a straight answer?" Well, Baum wrote 13 more Oz books, and in those, Dorothy's age varied. It's like he was having a blast keeping us guessing, like a mischievous cat playing with a ball of yarn.

In one book, she's 12. In another, she's 18. It's like trying to figure out how old your pet goldfish is. You know, the one that's lived through more of your life than you care to admit.

So, there you have it. Dorothy Gale's age is as elusive as the Wicked Witch of the West's broomstick. But hey, isn't that part of the fun? It's like trying to guess your friend's age at their surprise birthday party. You know they're older than you, but by how much? That's the mystery!

Next time you watch The Wizard of Oz, remember Dorothy could be 16, or she could be 18. Or maybe she's a timeless figure, like a fine wine, aging to perfection with each passing year. After all, isn't it the magic of the story that truly matters? Now, who's ready to click their heels and say, "There's no place like home"?
