Let's Start with the Basics

Alright, so you might already know that the United States is a big ol' melting pot, made up of 50 unique states. But did you know that this number hasn't always been the case? Nope, it's not some magical constant that's been there since the beginning!

In fact, when the U.S. was first established, there were only 13 states. Yep, you heard it right! The original 13 colonies - like Virginia, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania - were the ones that first came together to form this great nation.

Growing Pains

But why the sudden growth spurt, you ask? Well, as the country expanded westward, new territories were established. And as time went on, these territories started knocking on the door, asking to join the club.

Take Alaska, for instance. It was purchased from Russia in 1867 for a cool $7.2 million (that's about $130 million today!). But it didn't become a state until 1959. Talk about a long wait!
