Commentary On The Gospel Of John Chapter 1

So, there I was, walking my dog, Biscuit, in the park the other day. You know how it is, you're just going through the motions, picking up after Biscuit, when suddenly, something catches your eye. In this case, it was a squirrel, but that's not the point. The point is, it made me think about how we often miss the big stuff because we're too focused on the little details. And that, my friends, is a pretty good way to start thinking about the Gospel of John, Chapter 1.

In the Beginning...

John starts his gospel with a bang, or rather, a "beginning". He's not talking about the beginning of John's life, or even Jesus' life. No, he's talking about the big Big Bang of creation. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Now, that's some heavy stuff right off the bat. John's not wasting time with pleasantries, he's diving straight into the deep end.

And who is this "Word", you might ask? Well, John's not leaving us in the dark. He's talking about Jesus. He's saying that Jesus, the Word, was there at the very beginning, working alongside God, being God. It's a pretty mind-blowing claim, and it sets the tone for the rest of the chapter.

Light and Life

John goes on to say that this Word, this Jesus, is the light that brings life to everyone. Now, I don't know about you, but when I think of light, I think of those fancy lamps they sell at IKEA. But John's not talking about home decor here. He's talking about the kind of light that illuminates our lives, that gives us purpose and meaning.

And this light, this Jesus, wasn't just some flickering candle in a dark room. No, he was the main event. He was the reason the world exists. And not only that, but this light was coming to his own people, and they didn't recognize him. Talk about a missed opportunity!

John the Baptist: The Original Hype Man

Now, let's talk about John the Baptist for a moment. He's like the original hype man, shouting from the rooftops about this Jesus guy. He's saying, "Hey, listen up! This is the real deal! He's the one I've been talking about!" And then, he sees Jesus walking by, and he says, "Look, there he is! The lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!"

I mean, can you imagine being there? The excitement, the anticipation? It must have been electric. And then, Jesus turns around and looks at John, and John just says, "There he is! I didn't even know him, but now that I see him, I know he's the one." It's like the ultimate reveal, the big finale of a magic trick.

Following Jesus

And then, something amazing happens. Two of John's disciples, Andrew and another guy (who we'll find out later is Simon Peter), start following Jesus. They spend the day with him, and then they go and tell their friend Philip about this amazing guy they just met. Philip, in turn, tells Nathaniel (also known as Bartholomew), and Nathaniel's all, "Nah, nothing good can come from Nazareth."

But then, Jesus sees Nathaniel coming towards him, and he says, "There's an Israelite in whom there is no deceit." Now, how did Jesus know that? Nathaniel's freaking out, thinking Jesus must be the Son of God or something. And Jesus just smiles and says, "You'll see greater things than that."

Greater Things

Isn't that just like Jesus, though? Always promising greater things. And you know what? He delivers. Throughout the rest of the gospel, we see Jesus doing all sorts of amazing things - healing the sick, feeding the hungry, even raising the dead. He's the real deal, the light that brings life to everyone.

So, the next time you're out walking your dog, or doing whatever it is you do, remember John's gospel. Remember the big, mind-blowing claims about Jesus. Remember the light that brings life. And remember, there are always greater things to see.
