When the Bank Holiday Monday Blues Hit the High Street

So, there I was, last Bank Holiday Monday, armed with a list as long as my arm and a caffeine buzz that could power a small city. I'd woken up with that 'I must buy all the things' feeling, you know the one? I was ready to conquer the shops, tick off my list, and have the rest of the day to myself. But as I stepped out into the sunshine, I was met with a surprise. A closed sign on my local shop. What? How? It's a Bank Holiday, not a Bank Holiday Monday!

Now, I'm not one to judge (well, maybe a little), but I couldn't help but wonder, why do some shops close on Bank Holiday Mondays? I mean, isn't that when we're all out and about, ready to spend our hard-earned cash? I decided to do a bit of digging, and it turns out, it's not just my local shop. Many retailers follow this trend. But why?

Why the Mystery Monday Closure?

After a bit of research (and a few calls to my retail friends), I found out there are a few reasons why some shops close on Bank Holiday Mondays.

Staff Shortages. Bank Holidays often fall on Mondays, and many retail staff work weekends. So, having a Monday off can be a nice treat for them. Some shops close to give their staff a well-deserved break.

Quieter Trading. While some of us are ready to shop 'til we drop, others prefer to spend their Bank Holidays relaxing or catching up on chores. This can lead to quieter trading on Mondays, making it less profitable for some shops to stay open.

Tradition. Some shops close on Bank Holidays simply because it's tradition. It's what they've always done, and it's a chance for the staff to have a long weekend.

But What About the Rest?

Not all shops close on Bank Holiday Mondays, of course. Many stay open, ready to serve us shopaholics. So, why do they stay open?

Customer Demand. With more people out and about on Bank Holidays, some shops stay open to meet this demand. They see it as an opportunity to boost sales.

Competition. If their competitors are open, some shops stay open to avoid losing out on sales. It's a dog-eat-dog world out there, folks!

Staff Availability. Some shops have staff who are happy to work on Bank Holidays, so they stay open to serve their customers.

So, What Can We Do?

If you're like me and you want to shop 'til you drop on Bank Holiday Mondays, the best thing to do is check your local shops' opening hours before you head out. Many shops update their hours on their websites or social media pages.

And if you find your favorite shop is closed, don't despair. There's always online shopping, right? (Just don't tell my bank about that.)

In the end, it's all about balance. Retail staff need time off too, and sometimes, a day of rest is just what the doctor ordered. So, let's not be too hard on the shops that close. After all, they'll be back open before we know it, ready to serve us with a smile.

Until next time, happy shopping (and resting)!
