So, I was wandering around my local bookstore the other day, you know, just browsing, trying to find something new to dive into. I stumbled upon the Harry Potter series, and I must admit, I got a bit nostalgic. I mean, who doesn't remember those magical nights spent under the covers with a flashlight, trying to finish just one more chapter?
But then, it hit me. I started thinking about all the incredible actors who brought these characters to life. And, as with any long-running series, some of them are no longer with us. It's a bittersweet reminder of the magic they left behind. Let's take a moment to remember some of them, shall we?
Richard Harris and Richard Harris Jr.
Let's start with the original Dumbledore, Richard Harris. He was a fantastic actor, and his portrayal of the wise and powerful headmaster was spot on. Sadly, he passed away in 2002, just before the release of the second film, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. His son, Jared Harris, took over the role for the next two films, but it was a tough act to follow.
Must Read
Fun fact: Jared Harris is also known for his role as Lane Pryce in Mad Men. So, you can see the magic of the Harrises spans across different worlds, both literal and metaphorical!
Richard Griffiths
Remember the lovable, yet slightly terrifying Vernon Dursley? The actor who brought him to life, Richard Griffiths, was as talented as he was larger than life. He passed away in 2013, leaving behind a legacy of hilarious and memorable performances.
Side note: Griffiths was also known for his role in the British comedy series The History Boys. If you haven't seen it, it's a must-watch. It's a testament to his incredible range as an actor.
John Hurt
Who could forget the chilling voice of Garrick Ollivander, the wand maker? The late, great John Hurt brought a unique charm and eerie intensity to the role. He passed away in 2017, but his performances live on, reminding us of the magic he brought to the screen.
Did you know? Hurt had an impressive career spanning over six decades. He was a true icon of British cinema, with roles in films like Alien and The Elephant Man.

Alan Rickman
And then there's the one and only Severus Snape. The late, great Alan Rickman brought depth and complexity to the role, making us love and hate Snape in equal measure. His passing in 2016 was a huge loss to the film industry.
Fun fact: Rickman was also known for his iconic roles in Die Hard and Love Actually. He had a way of making even the most villainous characters strangely endearing. That's some serious acting magic!
Robert Hardy
Last but not least, let's not forget Cornelius Fudge, played by the late Robert Hardy. He was a fantastic actor, known for his roles in various British productions. He passed away in 2017, leaving behind a legacy of memorable performances.
Side note: Hardy was also a keen beekeeper in his later years. Now that's a hobby I can get behind (pun intended)!
So, there you have it. A little trip down memory lane, remembering some of the incredible actors who brought the magical world of Harry Potter to life. They may be gone, but their performances live on, reminding us of the magic they left behind.
Next time you watch a Harry Potter film, take a moment to appreciate the incredible talent that went into bringing these characters to life. And, if you're feeling nostalgic, why not re-read the books or watch the films again? After all, as Dumbledore would say, "Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, when one only remembers to turn on the light."
