Where The The Name Halloween Come From

Ever wondered where the spooktacular name "Halloween" comes from? Let's dive in, shall we?

Back in the Day

Picture this: ancient Celtic times, around 2,000 years ago. The Celts, who lived in the area that is now Ireland, the UK, and northern France, celebrated a festival called Samhain. It was their New Year's Eve, marking the end of summer and the harvest season.

Now, here's where it gets interesting. The Celts believed that on the night before the new year, the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred. This made it a perfect time for the ghosts of the dead to return to earth.

Meet the Ghost with the Most

One of these ghosts was a mischievous fellow named Samhain. He was the lord of the dead, and his festival was named after him. Over time, the name of the festival evolved into "Halloween," and the night before the celebration into "Hallows Eve," which eventually got shortened to "Halloween."

Pretty cool, huh? It's like the ghostly version of a celebrity naming a star after themselves!

Trick or Treat, Smell My Feet

Fast forward to the 19th century in America. Halloween was becoming more of a community celebration, with parties and games. But it wasn't until the 1920s and 1930s that the trick-or-treating tradition we know today started to take shape.

Kids would go door-to-door, asking for treats (or else they'd play a trick on you!). The practice was also known as "souling" or "guising," where kids would dress up in costumes and collect soul cakes instead of candy.

Pumpkin Carving: A Gourd-geous Tradition

Speaking of traditions, who can forget the humble pumpkin? The practice of carving pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns comes from an Irish folktale about a man named Stingy Jack.

According to the story, Jack tricked the devil into promising not to take his soul to hell. Instead, Jack challenged him to climb a tree to fetch him some apples. The devil agreed, but Jack put a cross on the tree, trapping the devil. In exchange for his freedom, the devil promised Jack he wouldn't take his soul when he died.

But when Jack finally kicked the bucket, God wouldn't allow such a miserable creature into heaven. The devil, upset by the trick Jack had played on him and keeping his promise, wouldn't allow Jack into hell. He sent Jack to wander the Earth with only a burning coal to light his way. Jack put the coal into a carved-out turnip, and that's how the jack-o'-lantern was born!
