So, there I was, minding my own business on the platform, waiting for the train to work. You know how it is, checking emails, sipping coffee, trying not to spill it on my shirt. Suddenly, this guy comes rushing past me, leaps off the platform, and jumps in front of the train! I kid you not, my coffee went flying, and I was left there, staring like a goldfish out of water.
Now, before you start thinking I'm about to tell you some tragic tale, let me stop you right there. This guy wasn't trying to end it all. No, no, no. He was trying to save a cat. Yes, you heard it right. A cat. Now, I'm all for feline welfare, but jumping in front of a train? That's a new level of cat lover, folks.
Anyway, back to the story. So, the train screeches to a halt, the driver looks like he's seen a ghost, and the cat, well, it's sitting there, licking its paw, like it's just been for a casual stroll in the park. The guy, let's call him 'Hero Harry', he's lying on the tracks, looking a bit embarrassed, I think. The crowd starts cheering, someone calls an ambulance, and I'm just standing there, coffee-less, wondering how my morning went from zero to sixty in under a minute.
Why Do People Do Crazy Things?
Now, I'm not a psychologist, but I've been thinking about this a lot. Why do people do crazy things? I mean, sure, we've all had those moments where we think, 'What if I just...' and then our brain slams on the brakes. But Hero Harry? He didn't just think it, he did it. And for a cat, no less!
I did some digging, and it turns out, people have been jumping in front of trains to save animals for ages. There's this one story from 1970, a guy in London jumped in front of a train to save a dog. The dog was fine, the guy... well, he wasn't so lucky. But that's a story for another time.

Are We Hardwired to Help?
So, are we hardwired to help? Is there some primal instinct that kicks in when we see a helpless creature? Or is it just a case of 'I was bored, and this seemed like a good idea'? I mean, I've been there, right? You're at a party, someone challenges you to eat a whole chili pepper, and next thing you know, you're in the bathroom, crying like a baby, wondering why you didn't just say no.
But seriously, folks, while it's great to want to help, let's maybe think about the consequences before we leap (pun intended) into action. I mean, Hero Harry could've ended up as a Harry Pancake if that train hadn't stopped in time.

And speaking of consequences, did you know that jumping in front of a train can cause serious damage to the train itself? I mean, sure, the cat's safe, but now the train's delayed, and all those commuters are late for work. All because Harry wanted to play hero. Just something to think about, folks.
So, What Happened to Hero Harry?
Well, after the ambulance took him away, I never saw Harry again. I like to think he's out there, somewhere, living his best life, with a cat or two under his belt. And maybe, just maybe, he's learned his lesson about train surfing.
As for me, I'm back to my old routine. Standing on the platform, waiting for the train, trying not to spill my coffee. And every time I see a cat, I can't help but wonder, 'Is this the one that'll make me jump in front of a train?' But don't worry, folks, I've learned from Harry's mistake. I'll leave the heroics to the professionals. Or at least, to the people who aren't holding a hot coffee.
