How Much Are The Lionesses Paid

So, I was watching the Lionesses, our fabulous women's football team, absolutely bossing it on the pitch the other day. I mean, they were like a well-oiled machine, each player knowing exactly where the other was going to be before they even moved. It was brilliant, and I couldn't help but think, "These girls are amazing, but how much are they actually getting paid for this?"

Let's Talk Money, Honey

Now, I know what you're thinking, "Why does it matter how much they're paid? They're out there playing their hearts out, that's what's important." And you're right, it is important. But let's face it, we all love a bit of gossip, and let's not forget, money talks, baby.

England's Lionesses: The Basics

Alright, so let's start with the basics. The Football Association (FA) is the governing body for football in England, and they're the ones signing the cheques for the Lionesses. Now, the FA doesn't exactly shout their salaries from the rooftops, but we can make some educated guesses.

In 2017, the FA announced they were going to equalize the match fees for both the men's and women's senior teams. This means that for every game they play, the Lionesses get the same amount as the Three Lions. Not bad, right?

Match Fees: The Nitty-Gritty

So, how much are we talking here? Well, it's not exactly a king's ransom. For friendlies, the Lionesses get around £2,000 per game. Now, I know what you're thinking, "Wow, that's a lot of money for a kickabout!" But remember, these girls are training like athletes, playing like professionals, and representing their country. Plus, they're not exactly rolling in it like their male counterparts.

For World Cup and European Championship qualifiers, the match fees go up to around £3,500 per game. But here's the thing, these girls aren't guaranteed a salary. They only get paid for the games they play. So, if they're not called up to the squad, they're not getting paid.

But What About The Big Leagues?

Now, you might be thinking, "Sure, that's all well and good, but what about the big leagues? What about the WSL (Women's Super League)?" Well, that's a bit more complicated. The WSL is the top tier of the English women's football league system, and the salaries can vary quite a bit.

The top players in the WSL can earn around £30,000 to £50,000 a year. Now, I know what you're thinking, "That's not much for a professional athlete!" And you're right, it's not. But remember, the WSL is still a relatively new league, and it's only just starting to gain traction. Plus, the players are often part-time, which can affect their earnings.

But things are looking up. The FA has promised to double the prize money for the Women's FA Cup, and the WSL is getting more and more exposure. Plus, with the Lionesses doing so well on the international stage, more and more people are taking notice of women's football.

So, while the Lionesses might not be rolling in it just yet, things are definitely looking up. And who knows, maybe one day we'll see them earning as much as the men. After all, they're just as good, if not better, on the pitch. Right?

Anyway, that's enough about the money. Let's just enjoy watching our girls kick some serious butt on the pitch. Come on, Lionesses!
