So, there I was, standing in line at the airport, passport in hand, when the guy in front of me turns around and asks, "You're from NATO land, right?" I blinked, a bit taken aback. I mean, I knew I was from a NATO country, but I'd never heard it phrased quite like that. It got me thinking, just how many of us are there in this NATO club?
Let's Count 'Em
Alright, let's dive in. NATO, or the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was founded in 1949. It started with just 12 countries. You know the drill, count on your fingers - Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Iceland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Now, you might be thinking, "Hey, that's not so many!" Well, hold onto your hats, because things started to grow. Over the years, more countries joined the party. Some left, some rejoined, but let's not get ahead of ourselves.

Welcome to the 90s
In the 1990s, NATO expanded eastwards. Remember the Cold War? Yeah, that was a thing. After it ended, several former Soviet states wanted in on the NATO action. In 1999, three new members joined - Poland, Hungary, and the Czech Republic. That brought the total to 19.

But wait, there's more! In 2004, another seven countries joined. That's right, seven. Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, and Slovenia all joined the NATO crew. That's a whole lot of new friends to make!
By now, you're probably wondering, "How many are there now?" Well, let's do the math. We started with 12, added 10 more in the 90s and 2000s. That's... carry the one... 22 countries!

NATO didn't stop there. In 2009, Albania and Croatia joined the gang. Then, in 2017, Montenegro became the 29th member. And just last year, in 2020, North Macedonia joined the party. That brings us to a grand total of... drumroll please... 30 NATO countries!
So, there you have it. From 12 to 30, NATO has grown quite a bit. And who knows? Maybe one day, we'll all be part of this international club. But for now, let's just enjoy the fact that we're all in this together, yeah?
