How Old Was Cherry In The Outsiders

Alright, gather 'round, folks! We're about to dive into a question that's been tickling the curiosity of bookworms and movie buffs alike. You know that feisty, red-headed character from The Outsiders, Cherry Valance? Ever wondered, "Just how old was she, anyway?" Well, buckle up, 'cause we're gonna find out!

Let's Start with the Book

S.E. Hinton, the brilliant mind behind The Outsiders, didn't give us a specific age for Cherry. But she did drop some hints. Cherry's a senior in high school, which means she's at least 17, right? But hold your horses, because there's more to this story than meets the eye.

Remember when Cherry says she's "older than I look"? That's our first clue! Now, Hinton herself was just 16 when she wrote the book. So, if we're thinking like a teenager (which, let's face it, we all still do sometimes), Cherry might be a year or two older than our author. So, let's say 18 or 19.

Now, Let's Talk Movies

In the 1983 film adaptation, Cherry's played by the lovely Diane Lane. At the time of filming, Diane was 18. But remember, movie characters aren't always the same age as the actors playing them. So, let's not get too hung up on that.

But hey, while we're on the topic of movies, did you know that Diane Lane was actually younger than some of her co-stars? C. Thomas Howell (Ponyboy) and Rob Lowe (Sodapop) were both 19 when they played high school juniors. Talk about a blast from the past!

So, What's the Verdict?

Alright, alright, let's wrap this up. Based on the book and the movie, our best guess is that Cherry Valance was probably around 18 or 19 years old. But remember, folks, this is all just a bit of fun! It's not like we're solving a crime here.

Now, here's the thing. Whether Cherry was 17, 18, or 19, it doesn't change the fact that she's a total badass. She's fierce, independent, and she doesn't take crap from anyone. And that, my friends, is something to aspire to, no matter how old (or young) you are.
