How Old Is Mary Poppins The Movie

Hey there, movie buffs! Let's dive into the magical world of Mary Poppins and find out just how old this timeless tale is. Grab your spoonful of sugar, and let's get started!

Blast from the Past

Alright, so you might be thinking, "How old is Mary Poppins? Older than my grandma's favorite tea set?" Well, you're not far off! The movie, directed by the legendary Robert Stevenson, first graced our screens in 1964. That's right, it's been around for 58 years – almost six decades of chimney sweeps, talking penguins, and magical nannies!

Now, you might be wondering, "Isn't Mary Poppins based on a book series?" And you'd be correct! The character was first introduced in a series of children's books by P.L. Travers in the 1930s. But today, we're focusing on the movie, which is celebrating its 58th birthday this year.

From Page to Screen

So, how did this beloved story make its way to the big screen? Well, Walt Disney himself was a fan of the books and tried to convince P.L. Travers to let him make a movie out of it. It took him 20 years of persuasion, but finally, in 1961, Travers agreed. And thus, the magical journey of Mary Poppins began!

Now, you might be thinking, "That's all well and good, but what about the music?" Well, hold onto your hats, because the movie features some of the most iconic songs in cinema history. Composed by the Sherman brothers, these tunes include "A Spoonful of Sugar," "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," and, of course, "Chim Chim Cher-ee," which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song.

But here's where things get really interesting. In 2018, a sequel was released – yes, you heard it right! Mary Poppins Returns, starring Emily Blunt, hit the screens 54 years after the original. Talk about a long-awaited reunion!
